Trip to Yreka CA

I needed a gas gauge. Annie needed food. Neighbor Larry needed some propane plumbing fittings. So for a nice scoot I went north to Yreka where there is one of  Uncle Wally’s mansions.

Very nice ride, cooling in the 90+ heat. Annie appreciated the dog food, though she is sick from the heat. Larry used the parts he ‘ordered; to hook up a propane in his old, old van. Unfortunately he hooked the tank high side (120+ lbs pressure in this heat) to the gas low side (5 lbs pressure). This did not work so good. But the good news is that his van did not explode, but it blew the burner control valves of his stove out. I won’t speculate what his effort to use parts fished from discarded items will cost him now! Much more than he has. Larry is a nice but rather penniless guy. He brought a frozen dinner over for me to nuke for him.

It is still hot, with 95+ highs. But the web still says there will be dramatic improvements starting tomorrow.

A couple of pics of the ‘flotilla’ on the lake, taken with the camera hand-held at a 1000 feet or so from the lake, 250 mm equivalent.

Hot at Chastina

The last few days have been 90+ at downtown Lake Shastina Public Use Area. The temps are supposed to turn for the nice side in the West starting Friday. Hunters have left, no more searches for bullet holes in Barth are necessary. I keep looking at Emerald Mansion on top of Emerald Mountain on Emerald Isle in the middle of Lake Shastina near Weed OR. Wishing I could see inside. But a break-in is not possible because there is a care taker living there.

Neighbor Camper Larry went to Weed to do some laundry, get groceries, and a drive to a nice and cool little lake southeast of Weed, inviting me to go. Needing a laundry and looking forward to getting out of the heat a couple of hours, I accepted the offer, and bought him a burger on the way back to compensate him for gas. He even let AtD go! I only took half my laundry, so I may scoot to weed for a couple more loads today as I am also out of coffee. And that is an entirely unacceptable predicament to be in, “a revolting development” as Riley would say.

There were a couple of pics worth taking on the trip, but I will give you one guess where the camera was!

Warm in Weedville

Unfortunately a warm front passed through, driving the high temps to 90+ in the area. There is not much to do around Weed. Another trip to Mt Shasta (town) could be in order, except that I do not like strolling down main streets being tempted by overpriced fudge and ice cream. Or maybe Yreka where there is a WallyLand! I could “moho-clean” but that is too much like housework. Besides, only I see it, and if it is ok with me, it is ok. I do wish that AtD could wash dishes!

I am expecting a mail delivery about Friday before I leave. The next destination has not been decided, whether to slowly follow the falling temps to Yuma area or take the straightest line home. But in either case the next stop is probably Hawthorne NV on BLM land at Walker lake.

A great view from Mt. Shasta

Need dog food. Off to the grocery store in Weed, CA.

In weed, I decide that I want a HDMI cable. So continue to nearest Radio Shack at a town called Mt. Shasta.

Been a while since eating in a restaurant. Decided to have breakfast in Mt. Shasta (town of). The special is what? And I asked again. The waiter (and owner apparent) said it is some sausage from South America. A waitress behind him quietly corrected his pronunciation, and country of origin. Strangest eggs/chorizo I ever had! Scrambled eggs with large chunks of polish hot dog. Oh well, this is northern CA!

Hmmm. I see Mt. Shasta (the mountain) up there. A quick query in the local visitor center and the National Forest Service facility confirmed no campgrounds for large rigs on Shasta, but a scoot up the mountain would be a nice trip. So I scooted to the end of the road, above 7000 ft. on the 14000+ ft. mountain, to the end of the road, which was a small ski run before global warming hit it (apparently). Now all evidence of the ski slope is gone except for a smallish parking lot. A nice trip. Of course last week I bought a new camera to replace the one I knocked into the dishwater, just to leave it at the moho today.

And that is the way I turn a one hour trip for dog food into a five-hour adventure sans pictures.

A few pics near Weed CA

I am still monitoring the tire that lost all it’s air. I decided to monitor for another day because I may have taken misleading pressure readings.

A few pics from the Weed, CA area are included below. I am still learning how to best control the new camera. So far it seems to overexpose, so I have to decide soon if it should be replaced.
