Closing in on departure… again

The re-roof is completed.

Awaiting the insurance check, which has been stopped and reissued. It went awry somewhere. Forced me to withdraw from IRA to cover the roof repairs.

Computer is now working smoothly again.

Scoot windshield is still on order and will be shipped to me on the road, forcing me to locate a designated receiver down the road.

Parts on order for Monday receipt to upgrade my internet satellite. Some of my activities are pushing me into FAP. The upgrade should (read: had better) alleviate the FAP problem.

Projected departure date to meet Steve O for the installation at casino South of Tucson is probably Tuesday. Then most likely onward to Ajo a few days to see the Fiddlers Contest.

Haiti insanity

News feature – US Military distributing MREs.
Have you ever prepared a MRE? You are one of a group of 1000s of starving Haitians. You receive a few MREs and run off to your family to eat. You open the boxes and bags. You see strange things. There are complicated instructions for preparation, but you cannot speak or read English. You need water, but don’t know it. Eventually, due to the language barrier and perhaps absence of water you may find a few things that can be eaten. You may have burned yourself with the heating chemicals. But most ends up in the endless litter. Mind numbing. Surely there is a better plan!

News feature – temporary housing assembly.
Reporter points to a large stash of portable housing components in an area intended to help 10,000s. He points out that there are only eight foreign workers there – where are the rest? How will they ever get this housing assembled?
Duh! They are surrounded by thousands of Haitians. Many must be smart, possibly literate, possibly bilingual. At least they should be teachable for the simpler tasks despite language barriers. There are your assemblers! Think! Surely there is a better plan!

Visiting Mr. Robinson

This afternoon the urge hit to get out of the house. Several weeks ago Carroll C. had emailed that Lee (Mr. Robinson) had relocated from Columbus, NM to Palominas, AZ just a few miles from me. An email exchange a few days ago told me his location, so off to Palominas I went to find him. We went to Mom’s (Vicki) restaurant and I bought him dinner. Lee lives on a very limited budget, no frills, meaning probably no electricity in the trailer which is seemingly offered to him free.

Lee seemed genuinely happy to see me, though I had to remind him who I was.

Lee was first encountered as a volunteer for the Columbus, NM Railroad museum about a year ago. A fellow traveler Ms. Masters and I shot very amateurish movies of his animated presentation in the museum. The museum contains a combination of railroad memorabilia and historical details of the raid of Pancho Villa on the town of Columbus. The great desert and history themed Pancho Villa State Park (NM) is located across the highway from the Columbus Railroad Museum.

I put together a small video feature of his presentation, and but I still have not woven the scenes that Ms. masters shot into a complete piece. Oh well, now that I have revisited Lee, I guess I must now complete the feature as I have been promising Lee and myself for a year now! One of these days when completed the feature will be offered for view or download on this blog.

By the way, Mom serves a limited sandwich-based menu, but every item is made in the kitchen from absolute scratch by… Mom (Vicki). Mom has a unique spot in town since she has the only restaurant in Palominas that is open long hours, 9AM to 9PM.

Upon leaving, I asked Mom what she would do if she had a second customer, as Lee and I chose the only table; a table barely for two. Her reply made sense. She said all her business is takeout. I wonder why!

I love those small hamlets!

Wasting away the time…

It seems that a departure date, a date to get back on the road, is destined to continue slipping. I returned home to get repairs on the scooter, but I seem to be trapped. Dang that karma! Sheesh!

Scoot is fixed. But I returned to a wind damaged roof. The re-roof completion is slipping because of inclimate weather, and a single-person company. No large crew. Also significant repairs to fascia were required. As well as total fascia painting. Sheesh #2!

A new windscreen was ordered for scoot. It was received yesterday. With great anticipation it was opened, only to find that some monkey sat on top of the fragile sticker, breaking it into two pieces. The seller requested pictures to submit a claim to UPS, and advised me that it would be at least 10 days before they could ship a replacement as they are out of stock. That translates into 17 days including shipping time, assuming stock is received in 10 days. I can, and may, elect to have it shipped to a remote location. But that would require me to use Barth to pick it up because it is too large to carry on the scoot. Sheesh #3!

The computer became nonoperational about three days ago. All my considerable efforts could not resurrect it. I did manage to get it operationg enough to do a complete dump of disk contents to a backup drive to save all my documents and data. Then a reload to factory configuration was performed. The last three days have occupied most of my time downloading all updates and loading only the most important programs. Massive downloads. Net result: exceeded the FAP level (Fair Access Policy, i.e. exceeded my daily bandwidth restriction). Sheesh #4!

And while the computer was down, and stock broker access by internet was impossible, the market took a three day plunge, resulting in enough retirement account losses to re-roof a second time. Sheesh #5!

So it is unknown when Barth may be on the roll again. Perhaps all of this really is good karma, as the weather has not been desert-camping friendly recently, with the high winds and rain to muddy the ground.

I am afraid to go outside!

Senator Scott Brown

Scott Brown’s victory in Mass. is a hoot! It will be interesting to see how the Pelosi machine spins it, deals with it. No doubt they will stall the seating of Sen. Brown as long as possible.

Brown’s victory speech was excellent. But he probably caught hell from his daughters and his wife for the “my daughters are available” joke/comment. He may not survive his families wrath for making that statement on national media! Now that was really a hoot.

I do have to sympathize with Ms. Cloakley on one item; notice that I always use MA or Mass. when referring to that state?
