Gotta do my duty!

I received a summons for , District Court in Tucson. I am on call for the week of June 23. I almost hope I get picked, though I do not want to be the foreman as I was last time (interesting what happens when you are the only male on a jury of housewives, one of which is a kindred spirit to the accused!). All that work just to hang the jury instead of he accused.

The only problem is the distance. If I have to report multiple times, the drive from Hereford to Tucson will turn into a drag.

But I guess I will not beg off. In the recent past I have received other summons, but I was released because of my summer travels. So it looks like I will be suffering the June weather without escape.

Now, to focus my attention back to Rhapsody in Blue.

Forward to the past… Silent Movies!

If I ever get enough money to power ole Barth out of the driveway, I will take a different approach documenting my travels and non-travels. Or shall I call them parkings?. I recently noted the glut of small, inexpensive flash video cams now available. And I believe that since I am not a professional level photographer, mini-movies may tell the story better than snapshot-quality still. So I have a highly rated but inexpensive flash-cam on order. And one to return to BestBuy that did not live up to my expectations. The Sanyo is not the most fully featured, particularly in the zoom category. But otherwise excellent.

A Digression: Man, Dire Straits sounds great through those old 1970s Sony MDR-20W earphones!!!! It is amazing how technology can sometimes regress.

“Man”, I said. Yup, I use that word a lot. But it can get one into trouble, much as the phrase “you people” when applied to an unreasonable airport security guard that happens to be black! His tunnel vision allowed him to only hear “black”, clearly a racist view, when I clearly was referring to the larger picture that he, as a security guard, had just requisitioned my billfold from me, which contained my only connection with reality in our panic-stricken society.

Remember those old Nazi movies where everyone on the train was always asked to show their ‘papers’, and if they looked a little strange the person was placed on the train on the next track headed, well, you know where? Is this country approaching that, or what? Just do not let The Man take your billfold.

The prior time “Man” got me into trouble was when my Mom passed away. The SSA, as usual, placed an immediate hold on the last deposit they made to her account, as they posted in advance, and they wanted it back. I am sure that the $300 was about to break the feds!

But that was the least of my worries. The stupid official at the on-line bank we used for her checking account locked her ENTIRE ACCOUNT! During a heated conversation with the bank, whereas I was explaining to them that the feds had no claim on any monies above the value of the SS deposit, and that I needed funds to pay creditors, not to mention bury her. His non-cooperative attitude turned to hostility and a hang up when I referred to him something like, “MAN, YOU CAN NOT DO THAT!” That was the first time I was ever discriminated against as a white person, by a white that I surmise, thought I was Black!

Despite the degraded conversation, a later attempt to contact him was fruitless, but his ‘assistant’ told me that the hold had been lifted, and to go away.

Hey, how did I get from movies to Nazis to the SSA? See, with the flexibility of movie panning I could have tracked that tangent, but a still snapshot that I started with left you open for a complete blindside; you didn’t even see it coming. I make my case, Movies it is. With an occasional still to focus your attention, which is more subtle than a 2×4.

Little size, lotta sound

The ipod I purchased has been sold on craigslist – too much time to deal with movie ripping, and it was too large for sound only. I am replacing it with a budget 8GB mp3 player, probably an RCA. I have a 4GB RCA unit from Wallys, but I am returning it because Wallys.com has a virtually identical 8GB unit for the same price. I hate it when companies compete with themselves – and I do not feel guilty making returns.

Most sound machines these days come with ear-buds – I hate earbuds. They make me feel as if I am on an airplane at 35,000 ft. with ears plugged from ear infections, and quickly descending.

After tweaking, and wondering why it was so ineffective, the equalizer on my tiny little mp3, I went to a drawer and pulled out a set of Sony earphones, Model MDR-W20 Turbo. These came with a classic Sony portable cassette player, a true antique, which I bought in a pawn shop in Phoenix in the 1970′s. This jewel is hardly larger than the cassette it plays, runs on a single AA, and is a Sony mechanical marvel. I still have the operational player which has been on many a ski slope. Gotta look for that gem.

I plugged the W20s into the RCA mp3 player, and voila, those little guys sounded as sweet as they did on the cassette player! And changes in both treble and bass ends of the equalizer spectrum were clearly effective! As I suspected, the ear-buds delivered with the mp3 player are junk, incapable of reproducing the highs and lows.

The W20s are not ear-buds, rather ultra-light weight over the head style. They are open air so do not create that descending airplane feeling. Actually this is the most comfortable earphone style ever devised. They can be like a baseball cap – always hunting for them when they are already on your head!

Alas, they are no longer made by Sony. And I want to keep this set undamaged to accompany my antique cassette player. But a quest on the web turned up the model Sony MDR-W08L, available for under $10, and with rave reviews from buyers on Amazon that indicate that they probably sound and fit exactly like my old MDR-20W friends.

I will put my W20s up against any earphone you can produce in a performance/comfort sound-off! The downside is that the W08Ls seem to have a poor reputation for reliability, so I took the easy-warranty and ordered three pair for under $10 each, but over $25 total, thereby saving $6.00 for shipping from Amazon.

I have high expectations for the MDR-W08Ls and look forward to their arrival. I may even get Annie a pair and connect them to a hearing aid!

A bit of ketchup

Ok, the family reunion is over and was a success, except for the $40 or so I lost due to my faulty accounting, and the inability of the Fall Creek Falls State Park staff to communicate simple facts, and stick by what they say. Be very wary if you have to deal with them, as the restaurant group planners are inexact, even incompetent. The park is outstanding. The cabins are ok. The restaurant food is down-homey and good. The location is TN hill country, and as much as I hate to say it… well, I shall leave it unsaid.

Not much happening, except that Sierra Vista is getting warmer. So far I have been able to survive comfortably.

Still no moho-travel plans due to fuel expense. If I can pick up a few bucks when I embark on my newest stock market strategy, I may go for a ride in Barth later this summer. (But that would be a first!)

I have taken time this spring to get a few medical issues out of the way, and so far there is no projection of my demise. I am also trying to flush a few unused possessions via craigslist, with some success. Since ebay is part owner of craigslist, I expect it to go away as a free service eventually, but until it does, I strongly recommend it for ads. If it ever disappears, let me know and I will start a garryslist.

Now that you have played catchup by reading this post, I’m going to put a bit of ketchup on the fries and eat this steak. Gotta maintain my girth, because I cannot afford to buy new pants.
